Cochran- Barbara Lee Bassford Carter, age 82 of Lakeshore Estates in Cochran, formerly of Berrywood Road, Parkville, Maryland, died Monday, August 27, 2018, in Pinewood Manor in Hawkinsville. She was born in Baltimore City, Maryland on December 5, 1935. She was a graduate of Towson High School and Essex Community College and attended Towson State College.

Active in community affairs as a Girl Scout Leader, playground recreation leader, P.T.A. committee chairman, volunteer teacher's aide and elementary school substitute teacher. Founder and treasurer of Oakleigh Hills Community Association where she served on the zoning committee to protect the integrity of the community. Past member and co-founder with her mother, Mrs. Lillian Bassford, of the Parkville Library Association, member of the Baltimore Bowmen. Preschool teacher at Chestnut Ridge Preschool in the 1970's. Member and Sunday School nursery director at Loch Raven Baptist Church where she also served as hospitality chairman, member of the missions and flower committees and as church trustee and representative to the Woman's Board of the Baptist Home of Maryland.

Following retirement to Georgia in 1994, she was a member of Limestone Baptist Church and served as church librarian and a member of the Cochran Woman's Club, serving a turn as recording secretary.

Survivors are her husband, Edward Theodore Carter of Cochran; her sons, Ted (Laurie) Carter of Tellico Plains, TN and Kenneth (Kim) Carter of Parkville, MD; five grandchildren and a great granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her children, Robin Jeanette and Raymond Carl Carter.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or Hospice Care Options.

Private funeral services will be held Thursday, August 30, 2018, at 11:00 A.M. in the chapel of Mathis Funeral Home. Private burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
