Cochran - Billy Braswell, age 80, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, at Atrium Health Navicent in Macon. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, July 20, 2025, in the chapel of Mathis Funeral Home with visitation beginning at 2:00 P.M., followed by the funeral service at 3:00 P.M. Burial will take place at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Born on February 28, 1945, Billy was the son of the late Willie and Beatrice Rowland Braswell. He graduated from Dexter High School in the Class of 1963 and went on to serve his state with dedication as a correctional officer for the Georgia Department of Corrections. Over the course of his career, he worked at both Cadwell Detention Center and Chester State Prison, ultimately retiring with the rank of Sergeant.
Following his retirement from public service, Mr. Braswell continued to contribute to his community through his business, Braswell Lawn Care. He took great pride in maintaining beautiful yards for his customers and found joy in being outdoors.
A devoted member of the Cochran Church of Christ since 1971, Mr. Braswell lived a life grounded in faith and service. His commitment to his church family was unwavering, and he remained active in fellowship throughout the years.
Mr. Braswell was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 57 years, Mrs. Betty Dempsey Braswell; as well as by his siblings Martha B. Bryant, Linda B. Beck, James Braswell, Roger Braswell and Tommy Braswell.
He is survived by his children: Gene Braswell of Cochran and Kerri (Zachary) Carter of Macon; and by his cherished grandchildren: Evan Carter and Morgan Carter. He also leaves behind his sisters Jean (Joe) Hewett and Mary Ann Braswell; brothers, Jerry (Shirley) Braswell, and Earl (Betty) Braswell; sisters-in-law Bertie Sue Dempsey, Betty Dempsey, Fay Rutherford, and Judy (Orlando) Cabrera; brother-in-law David (Marolyn) Dempsey; along with numerous nieces and nephews who will remember him fondly.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cochran Church of Christ, P.O. Box 444, Cochran, GA 31014.
Mr. Billy's legacy lives on through those who knew him—as a dedicated public servant, a hardworking small business owner, a man of faith, and above all else, a loving father and grandfather.
