Lcdr John
Charles "Papa" Pittman
Apr 13, 1946 — Feb 13, 2025
Retired US Navy LCDR & aviator "Papa" John Charles Pittman died on February 13, 2025. He was two months shy of his 79th birthday.
He was the son of James Sylvester Pittman (1922 - 1979) & Ethel Isabel McMahon Gerth Pittman (1922 - 2006). He was also the brother of Phyllis Elaine Pittman Lewis (1949 - 2007). He was "Johnny" to his parents and sister.
He'd been living with dementia in a nursing home in middle Georgia since 2019, but before that he lived a full, unique, and exciting life.
Papa was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on April 13, 1946, and grew up in Brunswick, Georgia. He graduated from Glynn Academy in 1964 before continuing his education & football career at Florida State University in Tallahassee. He graduated from FSU with a degree in marketing before joining the Navy and achieving the senior officer rank of Lieutenant Commander [AKA "Stallion"] and Flight Instructor with Training Squadron 27 [Naval Air Station, Corpus Christi, Texas]. After retiring from the Navy, he continued on professionally as a Private/Corporate Jet Pilot.
He was affectionate, cool, articulate, passionate, photogenic, athletic, and had a great sense of humor. He was charismatic, strikingly handsome, well-spoken, driven to succeed, and a talented photographer & writer. His handwriting was as impeccable as his always-pressed uniforms.
He loved music: Frank Sinatra, The Doors, Stephen Stills, Beck. He loved "madly", especially his daughters, friends, and animals. He loved women and whiskey - and he loved being a pilot.
He is survived by his two daughters Meghan & Hannah.
He will forever live on in the hearts & minds of those who knew him. Have a great flight, Papa. I love you.
