Obituary

Oneta Cannon Kitchens, age 84, passed away peacefully at her residence on Saturday, March 29, 2025.

A proud native of Cochran, Georgia, Oneta was the daughter of James Wiley and Alma Lee Cannon. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Cochran. After graduating from Cochran High School in 1959, Oneta worked briefly in Macon, Georgia, before beginning a 34-year career in education. She served as the secretary at Bleckley County Elementary School, which later became Bleckley County Middle School.  In 1993, she took on the role of secretary in the superintendent's office.

Oneta was very involved in her community as an active member of the Retired Educators Association and the Cochran Woman's Club, where she formed lifelong friendships.

She is survived by her husband, W.H. Kitchens, Jr. of Cochran, Georgia.  She was a beloved mother to two sons, Doug Kitchens (Tracee) and Kirk Kitchens (Sarah).  Her grandchildren, Colby Kitchens (Chelsea), Lauren Kitchens, and Natalie Kate Kitchens as well as her great-grandson, Henry Kitchens, were the joys of her life. Her brothers, Cecil Cannon (Rebecca), Bobby Cannon (Joyce), Gene Cannon (Faye) and William Cannon (Betty Ann); several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 1st at 3:00 pm at Mathis Funeral Home, Cochran. The family will greet friends immediately after the service. A private burial will be held at Salem Cemetery in Cochran.
