Cochran – Ouida Ann Newby Williams Smith, age 87, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 6, 2024, in At Home Senior Living surrounded by her family. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, February 17, 2024, with a visitation from 1:00 P.M. until 2:00 P.M. followed by a Memorial Service at 2:00 P.M. in Cochran First Baptist Church. Burial will be private in the Newby Family Plot in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Mrs. Smith was the widow of William Kirby Smith, Sr. and the daughter of the late Idus Atwell and Nomie Bell Floyd Newby. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Ben Hilliard Newby of Cochran, Angeline N. Moore of Danville, Virginia N. Jones of Winston Salem, NC and Idus A. Newby of Cochran.
She received a BS degree in Music Education from Georgia Southern University where she was a charter member of Sigma Alpha Iota Music Fraternity for women. She was a public-school music teacher for 30 years, having taught in Long, Wayne, Twiggs and Laurens counties; retiring from Bleckley County Schools in 1988. She was a former member of Georgia Education Association and the Georgia Music Educators Association. She was a member of the John Alden Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, serving as Regent, Registrar and Recording Secretary.
A former Church Music Director, she was a member of Cochran First Baptist Church and Dorcas Sunday School Class.
Survivors include her children, Robert (Traci) Williams of Scooterville and Suzanne (Kevin) Simpson of Kathleen; her grandchildren, Sarah Beth (David) Loudermilk of Cumming, Meg (Matt) Streich of Corpus Christi, TX, Zachary Simpson and Matthew Simpson both of Kathleen; great grandchildren, John David Loudermilk, Will Loudermilk, Beth Anne Loudermilk, Luke Streich, Maggie Streich and Emma Streich.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Georgia Hospice Care, 1111 Hillcrest Pkwy, Dublin, GA 31021
The family will receive friends at Mrs. Smith's residence, 189 S Twelfth St, Cochran, GA, beginning on Thursday, February 15th thru Saturday, February 17th.
